Global Nomad - Jockey's Ridge in Nags Head, NC

Story By Andrea - Founder of Gaia Conceptions

Jockey's Ridge
Nags Head, NC

We visit amazing places to photograph our new designs and I wanted to share a little bit more info about one of our favorite spots. In March of 2013 we visited Jockey's Ridge State Park located in Nags Head, North Carolina, it covers 426 acres and includes the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States. It is the most visited park within the NC park system. The park is about a 5 hr drive from the Gaia Studio in Greensboro, NC.

I knew I was going to need a very neutral background to shoot our newest Blockprint designs and the sand dunes along our coast make for a perfect backdrop. It also evokes the deserts of India which had inspired the blockprint fabrics and our wonderful Sari Design Series that where photographed at this location. This area is rich in History and a wonderful place to visit if your looking for a laid back vacation.

The islands are home to herds of feral horses, sometimes called "banker ponies," which according to local legend are descended from Spanish Mustangs washed ashore centuries ago in shipwrecks. Populations are found on Ocracoke Island, Shackleford Banks, Currituck Banks, and in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Sanctuary.

These amazing dunes are the location where the Wright Brothers had their first successful, sustained, powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine. From 1900 to 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright came here from Dayton, Ohio, based on information from the U.S. Weather Bureau about the area's steady winds. They also valued the privacy provided by this location, which in the early twentieth century was remote from major population centers.
Now this location is world renowned for it's great hang gliding.

Ocracoke was the home base of pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. It is also where the famed pirate was killed.

Global Nomad - Jaipur, India

Written By Andrea - founder of Gaia Conceptions

OMG y'all, it's 68 degrees today here in Greensboro, NC.  This beautiful day has got me dreaming of Spring and warm weather travel. What a perfect day to sit on my sunny front porch and put together one of our Global Nomad post.

There is just something so lovely about the light in India and the pink city of Jaipur has inspiration around every corner. Gaia Conceptions visited Jaipur in the summer of 2011 to photograph new designs and research plant dyed textiles. It was this same trip that our collaboration with the Rao family to hand print our natural dye block printed fabric began !!!

Where to SLEEP, EAT, and VISIT you might ask ?

My go too travel guidebooks for India are

Her book for Jaipur is one of my favorites and is full of useful advice !!! All Fiona's guide books are beautiful to experience in person with there textured paper and drawings. She also does a great job focusing on luxury bohemian travel for a range of budgets.

The third edition of Love Jaipur, Rajasthan was released in November 2012. The 172-page book is a stylish and authentic guide that helps both travellers, and residents, discover wonderful authentic experiences. Love Jaipur, Rajasthan also has mini destination guides to Agra, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Nagaur, Udaipur, Ranthambore plus itinerary advice for touring.

Gaia Outfit Idea #2

Oh Snap Wrap Jacket - The perfect grab and go wrap jacket that can be worn in many ways. The double layering on the hood and front wrap panels make this jacket extra cozy. At the end of each front panel are snaps, so the front of the jacket can be wrapped around the entire body or around the neck and secured. Or, just let the front panels hang down for laid back layers. Works great with all Love me 2 Times items.
